Get Racism out of Sports

A white man and an elderly Native man became pretty good friends, so the white guy decided to ask him: “What do you think about Indian mascots?” The Native elder responded, “Here’s what you’ve got to understand. When you look at black people, you see ghosts of all the slavery and the rapes and the hangings and the chains.

When you look at Jews, you see ghosts of all those bodies piled up in death camps. And those ghosts keep you trying to do the right thing. “But when you look at us you don’t see the ghosts of the little babies with their heads smashed in by rifle butts at the Big Hole, or the old folks dying by the side of the trail on the way to Oklahoma while their families cried and tried to make them comfortable, or the dead mothers at Wounded Knee or the little kids at Sand Creek who were shot for target practice. You don’t see any ghosts at all.

“Instead you see casinos and drunks and junk cars and shacks. “Well, we see those ghosts. And they make our hearts sad and they hurt our little children. And when we try to say something, you tell us, ‘Get over it. This is America. Look at the American dream.’ But as long as you’re calling us Redskins and doing tomahawk chops, we can’t look at the American dream, because those things remind us that we are not real human beings to you. And when people aren’t humans, you can turn them into slaves or kill six million of them or shoot them down with Hotchkiss guns and throw them into mass graves at Wounded Knee. “No, we’re not looking at the American dream. And why should we? We still haven’t woken up from the American nightmare.

      • Well as long as you support changing the mascots for Notre Dame , Oklahoma State, and NMSU. I find those offensive as a white male. Oh wait, whites cant be offended, well….just becasuse! #liberallogic

      • I agree 100 percent , it’s not ok and it’s a very big deal. How well would it go over if a new pro. Baseball, basketball or football team was created and the owner name the team the ( what ever State)- niggers or uncle Toms or the inbreeding white trash. How long would people put up with that? When our land was taken and our children were forced to have their hair cut and dress like their captures, the same people who murderd their fathers and raped their mothers and forced them to speak English. So now these rich people are killing them all over again by using these images to make a fast buck. excuse my language but that is b*******enough is enough.

  1. Forgive me if I sound ignorant or stupid, but wasn’t the redskins named after a professional football player with his consent as a badge of honor? Yes I am a white guy and don’t know much. But wouldn’t it be nice if the world just declared that we are all people amd not races?

      • Well i guess we need to change the name of the state Oklahoma because it’s a native American were meaning ” red skin people”? I don’t like being called white because no where on my body is white. Everyone’s people’s have been enslaved, forced out, and marginalized in some way. A sports team name is just a way for people to become the victims all over again.

    • You are correct about the latter part.
I do have Native American blood, and i think all words are just that, words as long as no crime against the person is committed.

  2. Everybody has an opinion, but unless you are Native American (because this debate concerns them and only them) your opinion does not matter. Wether you understand why it is offensive or not, your opinion does not matter. Nearly 95% of all Native People’s polled regarding this subject said that they did not support these terms and images being used in sports or propaganda. And THAT is the only thing that does matter. Lets all just grow up and treat each other equally as human beings and a good place to start is by no longer identifying a race of people as a cartoon character.

  3. At first I didn’t understand either, until I came to realize why would you name a team with after a people who were nearly eradicated because they weren’t thought of as a people? Why should teams bear the names and images of some of the most misunderstood people in the history of the world?

  4. To me, i think it’s an honor for a team to have an Indian name. My ancestors are Cherokee and i don’t feel it’s racist. BUT, everyone is entitled to their opinions and i can honestly see both sides of it because some names i have been called did offend me. My personal favorite is wagonburner. LOL So now,.when someone tries my patience i will tell them i will torch their wagon.

  5. this white DC guy and Dakota native always finds it curious when other white guys don’t believe it when the people that are subjected to the use of this name, chosen by a white guy, say they are offended. That’s exactly like you telling me you are offended by something and me saying “no you aren’t.” How very arrogant……and in this case, racist. you just don’t know it i guess.
